3rd-May-2011 10:47 pm - New book!
dark blue diamond
This is still in the pre-publication stages at present. I sent in the edits/revisions last week, and now i'm just waiting to hear whether everything is okay.

Out of the Shadows is again from Phaze and written as Julia Davies, and is set in the same universe as Bark at the Moon. This time the focus is on the relationship between werewolf guard Jai, and new pack-member Dane.

As soon as there is any more information about a release, I'll post here.
11th-Apr-2011 05:46 pm - Review for 28 Hours
red diamond

"From the blurb, this looked like a very promising story. And so it was. As the denizens of Earth prepare for an asteroid strike, Ms. Brookes focuses on a small band of friends on the English coast. The characterizations are strong. The real high points in the story come as the characters struggle with the impending doom of their world and the choices they have made, or refused to make, in their lives. The characters are all given plenty of stage time, and Ms. Brookes does a great job of putting the reader in their shoes and minds. Their motivations are understandable and sympathetic, one notable exception being the tragic result of Vince and Ellie finally admitting their long-concealed feelings for one another..."

** Now, I'll be the first to admit it's not the best review overall (they commented on the editing), but they liked the story, the characters, etc so I'm pretty happy with that!

I do have one question, though. The reviewer compares one of my characters to 'Dylan McKay'... But who is Dylan McKay?
9th-Mar-2011 07:47 pm - Life sucks
white diamond

This morning, one of my pet gerbils, Honey, died. Honey is the little ginger and white one in the pic, the black and white one is Kizzy.  She was absolutely fine yesterday but this morning, she had a fit of some kind and there was nothing I could do for her. At least she didn't suffer for ages and she wasn't sick for days or anything like that. And she was three years old, which is pretty good for a gerbil.

Kizzy seems fine at the moment; she's not searching for Honey too much so I'll see how she gets on being on her own.

26th-Feb-2011 11:51 pm - Header design contest
purple diamond
Just a quick note-

I have a header in the design contest under my alter-ego's screenname of ebonyfeather, so if anyone is interested and would like to vote for me (pretty pretty please with a cherry on top?), mine is third from the bottom.

I'm currently coming in sixth in the voting...

Yes, I know this is totally shameless but what the heck.
16th-Feb-2011 07:44 pm - Royalties!! And Ninjas!
orange diamond

Okay, so I've done the whole 'getting excited about my first royalty cheque' thing a while ago, but today came something even better. My first royalty cheque to be in triple figures (and that's after conversion from US dollars to GB pounds!)

On a completely unrelated note, I've found another interesting distraction- Ninja Warrior.

I used to watch it on Virgin 1 every so often and thought that when the channel closed down, that would be it. But no! It's now on the replacement channel they launched, Challenge (about the only thing in their entire line-up I actually watch- I really miss Virgin 1).

Ninja Warrior impossible not to like; you find yourself either cheering for the contestants to get to the finish line, or having a good chuckle when they land in the muddy water under the assault course. There's one guy I've never figured out, though, and I've seen him on a couple of the shows- what on earth possesses him to compete in a thong? It's really not a pretty sight watching a bloke in a thong scramble over the obstacles...  Even if he is entertaining.
Anyway, we're onto stage two tomorrow- I think five people got through out of the one hundred who tried stage one.
5th-Feb-2011 11:25 pm - Bark at the Moon on top 20!
red diamond
Phaze have just posted the listing for the top 20 sellers of 2010, and Bark at the Moon is on there!!!

Considering that the book was only released in September, I think that's pretty cool.

16th-Jan-2011 02:26 pm - Ugghhh.
blue diamond

Okay, so I've spent the past few weeks trying to find eveything I needed to apply for a US tax number. Even though I'm in the UK and am a UK resident born and bred. Why, I hear you ask, well, unfortunately, my publisher, Phaze, is US based and they need all authors to have one so they can file the correct paperwork.

So, that means applying for one and then, when I get that, I can fill out the form I really needed to fill out in the first place. Annoying, huh?

Anyway, it's all in the post now so fingers crossed. If nothing's wrong then I should have it within a couple of months.

I'd like to mention this link too- she's another author from Phaze who has posted an extremely helpful guide to filling out the forms if you're a non-US resident and need it for royalty purposes.

8th-Dec-2010 07:20 pm - Let it snow...
white diamond

So, if you're in the UK, you'll have had the snow and ice and freezing weather and if, like me, you really don't like the cold then you're probably sick of it! Personally, I can't decide; I adore snow- it just looks so pretty- but I hate being cold. And yes, that doesn't make sense, I know. The way I see it, I've been cold since the beginning of September anyway, so it might as well look nice at the same time.

It hasn't snowed for a few days, at least where I am, but unfortunately it just re-froze. So the gardens still have a good few inches of snow but the roads and footpaths have been compacted and then half melted (in a rare, slightly warmer day on saturday) creating a mirror-finish that you can barely stand up on. You see people doing Bambi impressions, the bit where Bambi is trying to stand up on the ice and it's legs are sliding in all different directions. Funny to watch if it's someone else but, having done it myself a couple of times recently, not so much fun if it's you.

It does look lovely, though, and so I thought I'd post a few pictures.

3rd-Nov-2010 06:29 pm - Review for Bark at the Moon
orange diamond
Elise Lyn of SensualReads gave 4 stars.

"...Bark at the Moon is a quick read that you will want to finish in one sitting. This tale has everything you want- heat, danger, surprises and werewolves. A great tale by Julia Davies, Bark at the Moon is extremely satisfying for all us who enjoy erotic paranormal tales."
